ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Welcome to another season of curling and fun! For the new curlers, welcome to the Woodstock Curling Club and we hope that all of you will enjoy the game. To everyone in the league, the camaraderie has become a tradition here at the club.
We need more members to join the committee. The tasks are not onerous and your ideas and time are most welcome. The more members we have, the more exciting things we can do for everyone throughout the season.
If you have any concerns please feel free to take them to any of the members of the committee. Concerns that you feel should be taken to the Board of Directors are to be given to Lyle Ball. Lyle can be contacted at 519-537-8452 or by email at lyle.ball@rogers.com
Games start at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm sharp. We listened to your requests at the end of the season last year and we will be playing 6 end games this year. Those of you that want to play another end or two there should be ample time to do this, if both teams playing wish to do that.
Please arrive on time for your game to avoid delays. If you are unable to curl, please find a spare from the team list provided to you. If you cannot find a spare, try contacting members from the other teams – sometimes there are individuals who do not mind curling an extra game.
We have fifteen (15) teams this year in our schedule. That allows one (1) team to have a bye and do the kitchen duties when it is your turn.
Rules:
Four Rock Guard Zone – this applies to the first four rocks thrown. The opponent’s rocks may not be hit out of play. If this happens, the “thrown” rock is removed from play and the other rocks are returned to their original position. Skips, please explain this to our newbies)! NOTE: If the opponent’s rocks wind up in a position that is advantageous to their team, that skip may decide to let the rocks stay where they wound up.
HOG LINE: Any stone that does not cross the hog line completely is removed from play. However, if a stone does not cross the hog line as a result of making contact with a stone already in play the stone that was delivered still remains in play. As well, any stone that is touching the back line of the house is still in play – skips, please explain this one to our newbies as well. Stones that are touching the side lines are automatically removed from play.
If you accidentally touch a stone with your foot or broom, you must let both skips know of this infraction; similarly, if you do not release the stone before it reaches the nearest hog-line, you must let both skips know. The skip of the opposing team then makes their decision known as to how the infraction will be dealt with. For newbies, do not worry – this does not result in a fine or suspension.
If you are not throwing your stones, you are to stand at the sides of the ice surface, next to the hog line. This way you will not interfere with the play of your opponents. Once the opposition has thrown their stone, please get ready, in the hack, to throw your stone. Each end should not take more than 15 minutes to play.
Each match will be a 6-end game. Try to complete all 6 ends but abide by the game times stated above. If there are less than 10 minutes to play, skips shall decide how many rocks will be thrown – objective is to ensure that each team has thrown the same number of rocks and that sufficient time (5 minutes) is given for the ice to be pebbled between games. The score for the end is decided on those rocks thrown. Teams may decide to not throw the last end and to split the end (see scoring). If not all ends are played, the ends are split between the teams.
For newbies, please remember, step on the ice with your “gripper foot” and step off the ice by lifting your “slider foot”. If you feel like you are going to fall, then let yourself fall. Usually, our tendency to fight the fall is what winds up giving us an injury. If you do fall, remember to tuck your chin in.
Even though we keep track of your team record and there is a natural element of competition to the game, the main objective is to have fun!!
Scoring:
15 points are given for a win, 10 points for a tie, 5 points for a loss.
One point is given for each end won; ½ point is given for each end tied.
The vice for each team shall enter the score on the score sheet provided at the bulletin board:
Record a W (win), L (loss) or T (tie)
Indicate number of ends won. For example, W-3 ½ indicates a win, 3 ends one and one end tied.
Please, please, please do not forget to do this
Teams doing kitchen duty are given 15 points if the meal presented is a home cooked meal. 10 points are awarded if the meal is catered.
Kitchen Duty:
The committee is trying something new this year. With everyone having a busy daily schedule it is difficult for most of us to take the time to prepare home cooked meals not to mention having your entire team on side with the decision on the menu. This year, we are trying a preset menu that will feature four (4) items (i.e. – lasagna with garlic bread and a side salad; spaghetti and meat balls with bread and a side salad; burgers & fries with salad; fish and chips with coleslaw) that will be rotated every week. Teams assigned kitchen duty is asked to prepare and serve the meal that is the next meal in rotation on the schedule. Again, we are open to suggestions to help this run easier and smoothly throughout the season. It is our hope that we can do every meal at or near the $6.00 cost per person.
The kitchen team can eat at no charge.
The kitchen team is to provide any additional details of the meal on the Friday prior to the night that you are hosting (1 week notice). As well, you can send the details to be posted on the website at curl@woodstockcc.on.ca or have Lucille Koopman email your request and update to all Friday Night League members in advance. Lucille’s email address is johnknox@execulink.com so please give Lucille ample time to send this out to everyone.
Members, if interested in eating a meal, should forward their intention to the hosts no later than Wednesday night. It is important that you do this ASAP.
Keep track of the names/number of members that paid for a meal and keep all receipts (if there are any). At the end of the evening, please forward this information to Lucy Tellier so she can keep record of this for our league.
GOOD CURLING AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN!
