President’s Message — by Chris O`Neil

Hello to All Returning Members, New Members and Visitors.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am excited to welcome everyone to the 2011/2012 curling season. I would particularly like to welcome any new members that are planning to join our Club this year and I wish you well as you start (or continue) playing this great game of curling!

What is curling? (An excerpt from Curling for Dummies by Bob Weeks)

Curling, first and foremost, is a game of fun and respect. For more than 500 years, the essence of curling has been based on reverence for the rules, admiration for your opposition and a belief that playing and enjoying the game is more important than winning it. Along with these ideals, many of the traditions from the earliest days of the game have continued. For example, opponents shake hands at the start of and conclusion of every game. That’s not just in fun club games, but right up to the final of the world championships. And while curling has moved from its early days of being played outdoors on frozen ponds into facilities where computers control the climate, it is still virtually the same sport, with the same rules and rituals. It’s kind of nice to know that in our fast-paced and ever-changing world.

I couldn’t agree more!  So enjoy everything about your season; the wins, the losses, the in-betweens and especially the after game time!

Now, for our returning members.  It’s time to gather up your curling duds, dust off the curling broom and shoes and get ready for an exciting curling season. Your Board of Directors have been and continue to be hard at work since the closing of the 2010/2011 curling season.  We are very excited about what we have to offer you for this up and coming season.

We continue to get the community involved with our Club and are asking our members to help us with the many tasks that are involved within your Club.  The support of many volunteers is what makes a community and it is also the foundation of our Curling Club.  So we ask that you consider volunteering your time and efforts to make the Club what it is today, a great place to meet new people, enjoy the camaraderie of old friends and enjoy this great sport – Curling!

Good Curling!

Chris O’Neil

Volunteer Letter

September 30, 2011

I always wondered why somebody didn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.
~Lily Tomlin

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
~Mahatma Gandhi

Communities are built on volunteerism.  On behalf of the Board of Directors I am asking that each and every one of you offer you ideas, time and effort for the betterment of your curling club.  On the ice we work as a team to complete the shot, the end and the game to achieve the best result possible -- a win, a hand shake and then a reward.  Now I ask you to come together as a team for yet another best result -- the season when we all made a difference for the Woodstock Curling Club.

Please consider contributing some of your time in the achievement of one or more of the tasks that follow. These tasks, when split amongst many people become quite manageable.  This means that we all enjoy the season and no one gets burned out.

  • ICE PAINTING – Tom Farlow is looking for volunteers to help with the ice painting.  This will be happening around Oct. 3rd – the date is dependant on weather and ice making conditions.  Please contact Tom Farlow as soon as possible at:   tom@tgsmeadows.com so that he can update you as he gets closer.

  • FREE INSTRUCTION AND PRACTICE WEEK -   Oct 17, 18, 19, 20  from 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Darlene Wood (dar.wood@sympatico.ca) is looking for people willing to help new curlers learn the basics:

- how to safely get on/off ice and walk on ice

- each position and their job  (skip, vice, second, lead)

- the layout of each sheet (boards, hack, rings, button, center line, hack line)

- how to step into the hack

- how to throw each turn (start your hand at 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock and back to 12o’clock and

 end in a ‘hand shake’)

- how to determine which turn to throw

- how to ‘deliver’ a rock from crouch position to an extended lunge (remember - no big push required when beginning)

- how to safely walk and sweep at the same time

  • HANGING POSTERS - volunteers are needed to hang promotional curling posters around town to promote Registration Week and various curling club events.  Contact Todd Poetter (facility manager) at:   rentals@woodstockcc.on.ca for further information.

  • CURLING CLINICS – volunteers are needed to assist with instruction (same as the practice week info above) through out the season which will help improve the game of a rookie or seasoned curler and will keep them coming back for more.  Contact Darlene at: dar.wood@sympatico.ca for more information.

  • BONSPEIL COMMITTEES - Keith Eppenberger is looking for people to help with the first 2 bonspiels of the season - The Member & Guest Golf & Curl and The Fall Classic.

Tasks may include collection of prizes, preparing score sheets, organizing the menu etc. etc. Contact Keith at:  membership@woodstockcc.on.ca

Other bonspiels are held through out the season.  If you would like to help at these events please don’t be shy and ask any Board member for the name of the convenor and we can put you in touch with them.

  • GRANT COMMITTEE – volunteers are needed to review/research any grant applications available to the club and submit pertinent information for the application.  Contact Chris O’Neil at:   president@woodstockcc.on.ca

  • LITTLE ROCKS AND BANTAMS – volunteers are needed to help assist Carlos Gregorio with the instruction of the little rocks and/or bantam programs on Sunday afternoons.  The program is growing and additional instructors are required.  Contact Carlos at: susanandcarlos@sympatico.ca for more information.

  • ADVERTISING SALES – volunteers are needed to sell advertising space for our interior ice surfaces walls/scoreboards/curling rocks and in the membership directory. Contact Darlene at:  dar.wood@sympatico.ca.

No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.  Thank you.

Volunteers aren't paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.

Fundraising Letter

September 18, 2011

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed a beautiful, safe and healthy summer!! Now that the leaves are starting to turn and the evenings are just a little cooler, we are beginning to think about our favourite winter sport – Curling.

On behalf of your Board of Directors, I would like to share with you our exciting new fundraising venture that we will be participating in - starting NOW.  And best of all, you are not spending any additional money over which you spend on a day to day basis and there is NO time commitment required for any of you to participate!  How is this possible, you might ask?  Well, do you:

  • Require groceries?
  • Require gas for your vehicle?
  • Shop for Christmas gifts or Birthday gifts?
  • Dine out?
  • Shop for yourself for everyday items, house hold items, clothes, office supplies etc.?
  • Plan to do a winter do-it-yourself home project?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, you will be an awesome fundraiser for your club!

Gift Cards for Causes is the fundraiser that we will be participating in.  Please have a look at the attached list of all of the participating retailers.  This is how you can help your Club out:

  • Decide which retailer(s) you would like to buy a gift card(s) from
  • Decide the denomination(s) you wish to purchase
  • Place an order for the card(s) with me
  • Full payment is required when you place your order (cash or cheque)
  • Approximately one week later your order will be available for pick up

Here is an example of how we can all raise funds.  After reviewing the list of participating retailers, this is what you have decided to buy:

 ·                     One Zehrs card for groceries in the amount of $100.00                             $100.00 X 3% = $3.00

 ·                     One Esso card for gas in the amount of $100.00                            $100.00 X 2% = $2.00

 ·                     One Indigo/Chapters Books card (for Christmas gifts) $100.00    $100.00 X 5% = $5.00

                                                                                                         Funds Raised             $10.00

You would then write a cheque payable to:  Gift Cards for Causes for $300.00 and bring it with you to place your order.  Gifts Cards for Causes gives the Club $10.00 for your purchases.  There is not minimum amount that you must purchase and there is no maximum amount either!

When you receive your gift cards, the full amount of the card(s) is yours to spend at your convenience, or give as a gift for the recipient to spend at the retailer(s) the card is specified for.

As you can see, you have raised $10.00 for your club just for purchasing gift cards for items you know you are going to spend money on anyway.

If we had 300 participants (club members, our friends and our families) and each person raised $10.00 per week, over the course of the curling season (20 weeks), we could potentially raise:

300 X $10.00 X 20 weeks = $60 000.00

YES, you read that correctly - $60 000.00 just to buy the things we would normally buy!!!!

Don’t forget the best parts:

      • NO limit to the time that we are allowed to participate

      • NO limit to the amount of funds that we are allowed to raise

And BEST OF ALL

      • NO time commitment on your behalf

So join me at the Woodstock Curling Club to place your first order Monday September 26 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

If this time does not work for you, then send me an email and perhaps we can make other arrangements.

Please do not hesitate to invite your friends, neighbours and family to participate.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached at dar.wood@sympatico.ca or at 519-421-9290.

The Board of Directors thanks you in advance for participating in this wonderful and PROFITABLE fundraiser!

 Cheers and Good Curling (soon)!!!
