President’s Message — by Chris O`Neil
Hello to All Returning Members, New Members and Visitors.
On behalf of the Board
of Directors, I am
excited to welcome
everyone to the
2011/2012 curling season. I would particularly like to welcome any new
members that are planning to join our Club this year and I wish you well
as you start (or continue) playing this great game of curling!
What is curling? (An excerpt from Curling for Dummies by Bob
Weeks)
Curling, first and
foremost, is a game of fun and respect. For more than 500 years, the
essence of curling has been based on reverence for the rules, admiration
for your opposition and a belief that playing and enjoying the game is
more important than winning it. Along with these ideals, many of the
traditions from the earliest days of the game have continued. For
example, opponents shake hands at the start of and conclusion of every
game. That’s not just in fun club games, but right up to the final of
the world championships. And while curling has moved from its early days
of being played outdoors on frozen ponds into facilities where computers
control the climate, it is still virtually the same sport, with the same
rules and rituals. It’s kind of nice to know that in our fast-paced and
ever-changing world.
I couldn’t agree more!
So enjoy everything about your season; the wins, the losses, the
in-betweens and especially the after game time!
Now, for our returning members.
It’s time to gather up your curling duds, dust off the curling
broom and shoes and get ready for an exciting curling season. Your Board
of Directors have been and continue to be hard at work since the closing
of the 2010/2011 curling season.
We are very excited about what we have to offer you for this up
and coming season.
We continue to get the community involved with our Club and
are asking our members to help us with the many tasks that are involved
within your Club. The
support of many volunteers is what makes a community and it is also the
foundation of our Curling Club.
So we ask that you consider volunteering your time and efforts to
make the Club what it is today, a great place to meet new people, enjoy
the camaraderie of old friends and enjoy this great sport – Curling!
Good Curling!

I always wondered why
somebody didn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.

I
shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do
or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
~Mahatma Gandhi
Communities are built on volunteerism.
On behalf of the Board of Directors I am asking that each and
every one of you offer you ideas, time and effort for the betterment of
your curling club. On the
ice we work as a team to complete the shot, the end and the game to
achieve the best result possible -- a
win, a hand shake and then a reward.
Now I ask you to come together as a team for yet another best
result -- the season when we all made a
difference for the Woodstock
Curling Club.
Please consider contributing some of your time in the achievement of one
or more of the tasks that follow. These tasks, when split amongst many
people become quite manageable.
This means that we all enjoy the season and no one gets burned
out.
Darlene Wood (dar.wood@sympatico.ca) is
looking for people willing to help new curlers learn the basics:
- how to safely get on/off ice and walk on ice
- each position and their job (skip,
vice, second, lead)
- the layout of each sheet (boards, hack, rings, button, center line,
hack line)
- how to step into the hack
- how to throw each turn (start your hand at 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock and
back to 12o’clock and
end in a ‘hand shake’)
- how to determine which turn to throw
- how to ‘deliver’ a rock from crouch position to an extended lunge
(remember - no big push required when beginning
- how to safely walk and sweep at the same time
Tasks may include collection of prizes, preparing score sheets,
organizing the menu etc. etc. Contact Keith at:
membership@woodstockcc.on.ca
Other bonspiels are held through out the season.
If you would like to help at these events please don’t be shy and
ask any Board member for the name of
the convenor and we can put you in touch with them.
No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the
burden of another. Thank you.

Volunteers aren't paid, not because they are worthless, but because they
are priceless.

Hello Everyone,
I hope you all enjoyed a beautiful, safe and healthy summer!! Now that
the leaves are starting to turn and the evenings are just a little
cooler, we are beginning to think about our favourite winter sport –
Curling.
On behalf of your Board of Directors, I would like to share with you our
exciting new fundraising venture that we will be participating in -
starting NOW. And best of all,
you are not spending any additional money over which you spend on a day
to day basis and there is NO time commitment required for any of you to
participate! How is this
possible, you might ask?
Well, do you:
·
One Esso card for gas in the amount of $100.00
$100.00 X 2% = $2.00
When you receive your gift cards, the full amount of the card(s) is
yours to spend at your convenience, or give as a gift for the recipient
to spend at the retailer(s) the card is specified for.
As you can see, you have raised $10.00 for your club just for purchasing
gift cards for items you know you are going to spend money on anyway.
If we had 300 participants (club members, our friends and our families)
and each person raised $10.00 per week, over the course of the curling
season (20 weeks), we could potentially raise:
300 X $10.00 X 20 weeks = $60 000.00
YES, you read that correctly - $60 000.00 just to buy the things we
would normally buy!!!!
Don’t forget the best parts:
And BEST OF ALL
